Emotional Intelligence is not an optional extra for Leaders at all levels. Given the complexity and increased demands of the current VUCA world of work, Emotional Intelligence has become one of the top 10 most important organizational capabilities. Greater competition, constant change, digitalization, remote working, harsh economic and operating conditions have all put increased emotional pressure on employees and their ability to deliver effectively. As the demands on organisations change, so do the expectations on leaders.

Today’s leaders need to be more flexible, open, and empowering. Traditional leadership competencies such as judgement, resilience, and charisma have shifted to meet the requirements of a digital age. Leadership is an ‘emotionally laden process and leaders’ emotions and their associated behaviours have been found to profoundly affect subordinates job satisfaction. Emotionally intelligent leaders will have more emotionally intelligent, thus more satisfied, engaged, and productive subordinates.

A recent survey identified ‘bad management’ as the biggest barrier to productivity. Research suggests that managers are responsible for at least 70% of the variance in their employees’ engagement. In a survey across 8,000 organisations and 600,000 employees, three of the top ten predictors of employee engagement stood out as being driven by leadership. Leaders with high emotional intelligence create a more positive leadership environment and lead followers who are highly engaged, and highly engaged employees are more likely to sustain peak performance.

Our leading with Emotional Intelligence Program provides organizational leaders at all levels with the tools, skills and competence needed to lead effectively in the current VUCA workplace.
